mitt romney prepares to speak in person with actual voters in sarasota, florida. yes, you're seeing it all without the aid of a hidden camera. the romney campaign is kicking off a new era of openness, six years after he first decided to run for president and with only 47 days until the election, i guess it's better late than never, the candidate has officially dropped his disdain and contempt for half the country and today he's rebranding himself as a warrior for the 100%. and if mr. romney's campaign occasionally reminds you of a circus act, well, it's worth noting he's appearing at a museum that was named after and built by one of the original ringling brothers. but do you think the president is buying this new message? well, here he is a moment ago when he was asked at the univision forum about his thoughts on mitt romney 2.0. >> well, here is what i would

say. first of all, i've been president now for almost four years, but the day i was elected, that night in grant park where i spoke to the country, i said 47% of the people didn't vote for me, but i have heard your voices, and i'm going to work just as hard for you as i did for those who did vote for me. that's how you have to operate as a president. i truly believe that. >> so there you have it. two dueling messages of unity fighting it out for the voters' approval. of course, there is still 47 days until they go -- the nation goes to the polls. that leaves plenty of time for mr. romney to change his message once again. but you know what they say about that? the more mr. romney changes, the more he stays the same. joining us now is msnbc contributor and columnist for the bloomberg view, jonathan alter, msnbc political analyst michael eric dyson of georgetown university, and matt miller, msnbc contributor and the

columnist for "the washington post." matt, the big reboot by the romney campaign is that the president believes in redistribution, and would you believe it, they've got him on tape saying this very thing 14 years ago. let's take a listen. >> i think the trick is figuring out how do we structure government systems that pool resources and, hence, facilitate summary distribution because i actually believe in redistribution, at least at a certain level to make sure that everybody has got a shot. how do we pool resources at the same time as we decentralize delivery systems in ways that both foster competition, can work in the marketplace, and can foster innovation at a local level and can be tailored to particular communities. >> okay. matt, tell me, what's the big crime here? >> there is no big crime, martin. >> there's no big crime? but the whole republican campaign has been built on this for the last 24 hours.

>> it's total crap, to use the technical term. mitt romney believes in redistribution. his health care plan in massachusetts was redistribution. social security, medicare, both programs that mitt romney says he supports involve redistribution. we redistribute all the time in america from the young workers to senior citizens, many of whom are more affluent than average families on these retire programs. rich states subsidize poor states. redistribution is as american as apple pie, and the idea they're trying to make obama out to be some kind of communist because of this is another pathetic last grasp of a campaign in trouble. >> john, this clip of the president is actually 96 seconds long in totality. he was speaking to a college of university students, i guess. how does that compare with 47 minutes of mr. romney speaking to his base at that fund-raising dinner? does one can sem out the other?

>> i don't think it does. first of all, this was many years ago, but also it's been tried before, martin, in 2008 john mccain's whole campaign in the fall was about joe the plumber. it didn't work. so that's what indicates that there's some desperation here on mitt romney's part that they're going to this well again. it will muddy the waters. it's not clear that what i call 47-gate, the videotape, is necessarily going to be a game-changer that sews up the election for obama. that's not at all clear. it's possible that people do resent what romney basically calls moochers enough that they can squeeze some votes out of this -- >> takers. >> -- and the whole thing is a wash at the end of the day. >> professor dyson, i want to play a bit more of the president this afternoon on the topic of mr. romney's 47%. take a listen. >> when you express an attitude

that half the country considers itself victims, that somehow they want to be dependent on government, my thinking is maybe you haven't gotten around a lot because i travel around the country all the time, and the american people are the hardest working people there are. >> professor, do you think we ought to be a little more sympathetic to mitt romney? maybe he has such a low opinion of the population because, frankly, he doesn't know the population. >> well, poor mitt romney. here is a guy who is just a lonely millionaire isolated in his own island of thinking. his imagination has obstructed the view that he has, and the real people keep getting in the way. this is an existentialist anxiety going on saying hell is other people, hell is poor people, hell is people who are not rich and mitt romney has no conception of who real people are. our colleague ezra klein has written a powerful blog where he

says that instead of thinking that the poor don't take responsibility, they take more than their share of responsibility. they're spending most of their brain power trying to figure out how to survive. they're not trying to be dependent. they're trying to figure out ways to be independent while those who are taking corporate welfare like mitt romney and his ilk continue to obfuscate the fact they are the moochers. the 47% are not the moochers. it's those who have had wealth redistributed to them, and, of course, we believe in redistribution in america except we believe in redistributing the goods and services and the wealth of those who are the masses to those who are the very few and the elite. so mitt romney here is only extending the logic of a kind of class of people who are not used to being empathetic or open to the masses of americans in this country and i think the film showed that. >> professor dyson, we're actually watching a puppet. i thought it was actually mitt

romney because it's a shot from behind but it appears to be some kind of pugilistic puppet on the side of the stage. i apologize to my viewers for making the mistake that that was, in fact, mr. romney. tim pawlenty, a man equally not really endowed with much charisma, has decided to step down from the romney campaign completely. he's taking a job as a lobbyist for the financial industry. what does that tell you? >> well, i mean, i'm not sure i read too much into it. tim pawlenty is not independently wealthy, unlike mitt romney, so he's just cashing in. >> but if mr. pawlenty had confidence in mr. romney's potential to win the election, yed he'd be hanging around, wouldn't he? >> maybe in hopes of getting a cabinet post. >> exactly. >> even though he endorsed romney, he did run against him. i'd be careful saying this is all a problem at the staff level or that these problems inside the romney campaign are somehow going to cripple his candidacy.

there is a pretty long time to go, and at this point in the campaign something that's a week old might as well be, you know, ten months old because, remember -- >> or in the case of romney's campaign, 14 years old in the form of the tape. >> but just in terms of sort of a time exposure thought experiment here, tit's only a week since romney made this i thought horrendous gaffe when before the next of kin had even been notified about the killing of the ambassador and his colleagues, he was out there politicizing it, and yet nobody is talking about it anymore. that was just a week ago. all i'm trying to do here is say to people, be cautious about thinking that this, to my mind, reprehensible videotape is somehow -- has somehow sunk mitt romney. that's not the case. >> okay, but, matt, to your point, i have and i have read your brilliant column where you explain that actually distribution is the function of a civilized society basically,

he also appears to believe or treat the american workforce with such contempt. he doesn't seem to understand that the working poor get that tax credit to incentivize employment. he doesn't seem to know that 36% of americans in this country don't use all their vacation days. this is not a nation of moochers. i have lived elsewhere. in south africa, in great britain, in europe. i know what moochers are like. this is not a moochers' country. >> i think that's a great slogan, martin. this is like lloyd benson against dan quayle. so i think that's perfect. of course, jonathan is right. there's still a long way to go, but it's hard in these days not to think about if you could sit down every undecided voter and show them romney's 47% video and bill clinton's convention speech, that the election would be over. that's all you need. look, romney obviously has a

kind of contempt for the working man, and it shows up not just in the words he uttered but in the policies that he's proposed which do so much to benefit the upper class, not at all like he was when he was governing as a moderate in massachusetts and i think in some ways he sold his soul to get the republican nomination, and that deal with the devil has left us totally unaware or he's become the hollow man. >> indeed. professor dyson, i was reflecting on charles dickens last night and "a christmas carol" where he shhas skrage sc saying this, if they want to die, they better do this and decrease the surplus population. it seems that might be the kind of thing we would have heard at the donors dinner. >> yeah. this is a nightmare of a scenario for mr. romney because

the real feelings he has, what he nurtures in his breast, what a man thinks or a woman away from the cameras where the truth is allowed to unfurl in ways that are not prohibited by political correctness, this guy opened his mouth to tell the truth about what he feels about the so-called unwashed masses or what sociologists talk about the deserving poor. he thinks these people are deserving of whatever they get, and guess what? it's not just the poor urchins who are urban dwellers, 47% captures a whole range of people. what's interesting and what will be provocative here is to see to what degree the 47% -- >> professor dyson, i have to intervene because unlike his performance over the issue of libya where he offered us a premature interjection, he's actually somewhat late, but he is arriving in front of the crowd in sarasota, florida, and here he is on the stage.

you're looking at live pictures of mitt romney speaking to actual voters at a rally in the sunshine state. this time in sarasota in full

public view, not inside a mansion in boca raton. his return to the masses coincides with several bad poll numbers. how bad? well, this may be the first presidential ticket to lose not one, not two, but at least three of the candidate's home state. wisconsin joins massachusetts and michigan in giving the ticket a big thumbs down. despite the presence of badger state voodoo economist paul ryan, this now mirrors several swing state and national polls showing the president with a commanding lead, and it could be the reason for why romney's campaign has decided to plan more battleground events with an adviser telling the associated press that, quote, some days call for three public events a day, a significant incries over ronl romney's past schedule. joining us in washington, jimy williams, and in philadelphia, dr. james peterson an associate

professor at lehigh university and a contributor to the grio. jimmy, there are very few presidential tickets capable of losing two, let alone three or more home states. is this where things are beginning to land for mr. romney? >> well, you know, i said the other day if governor romney had run back in -- when he was running for governor of massachusetts and had said then what he said back in may of this year, would he have been elected as ceo of the commonwealth of massachusetts? i think the answer was resoundingly no. so i don't suspect that governor romney is going to win massachusetts. i don't suspect he's going to win wisconsin. and i definitely don't think he's going to win michigan, especially after his op-ed on the auto bailout. the poll numbers are trending, and they're trending over the last two weeks the right way for the obama campaign and the wrong way for the romney campaign. interestingly, you've got a clip up now of governor romney in florida. i wonder how many people behind him are of that 47%. i wonder how many don't actually

pay taxes and they're actually listening to the man they're going to vote for. that scares the hell out of me about this country. >> dr. peterson, here is one key to romney's problems. reuters found that two-thirds of people who saw the romney fund-raiser tape identified with the people he was talking about, not the people at the dinner. so how do you overcome that level of alienation? >> well, you can't overcome that level of alienation -- >> he tried last night. he said he's for the 100% now. he was originally in the 1%, then he said he derided the 47%, now he's for the 100%. he's got there in the end. >> he got there finally in the end but there have been so many gaffes and lies and miscues and missteps in this campaign, even the people who reluctantly wanted to support this guy in the beginning are finding it hard to do so at this particular time. jimmy is right, polls are more

about trends and things are trending the way of obama administration, but romney and his campaign have been assisting them in their win and in their distancing themselves from him just by all the different mistakes. now, the reason why two-thirds of folk can identify with the 47%, because the 47% is not a fixed number. people move in and out of public assistance. you go to public assistance when you really, really need it and that makes the group even larger than the 47%. >> mr. romney was just being heckled. >> see, jimmy, there is hope for america. >> but speaking of that tape, jimmy, that tape came out in may. when you listen, you can hear mitt's donors, even his donors in their questions, they sound nervous about his chances. they sound anxious about whether he's really got this. >> it's a job interview. mitt romney is on the path for a job interview and he's interviewing for the ceo

position of the united states, and i don't think that they actually wanted to interview him. i don't think the republican party wanted to bring him in for a live interview. they saw his resume. it's a fantastic resume when you look at it on paper, but then you look at his record now and his positions now versus his record then, they don't trust him as dr. peterson just said. that's the problem. they don't actually think he's a conservative, and if you don't believe me, look at his record as governor. they know that. republicans aren't stupid. at least most of them aren't. i would say the same amount of dumb democrats, if you will, so they balance each other out. but my point is he's interviewing for a job and they don't like the candidate for the job and guess what? he may not actually win. >> martin, i'm glad you pointed this out. one, that sort of gives you the reason why he's creating this insane rationale about the 47%. he's trying to prove how he's going to be able to secure the office but it also underscores the fact that this is a transactional relationship. this is a quid pro quo relationship where if we support you and you get elected, you've

got to give us more tax cuts. >> it's astonishing, dr. peterson, because i always thought elections were decided by the vision of the candidate. mitt romney seems to understand them as being a transactional relationship. if you can get a tax cut, you'll vote for the president or you will vote for me but these the pure basis of it. >> one of the sad by-products of the citizens united supreme court decision is that the flooding of money into the political process now creates an environment where politicians like mitt romney can be defined by the donors who want to put him in office. it is sad and scary because at the end of the day we can't conduct american politics this way going forward. we have to repeal citizens united. >> absolutely. as after, thank you, gentlemen. next, you want to see what redistribution really looks like? we're going to show you in a moment. >> i wasn't criticizing them. he was saying the american dream should be open to everybody. >> you're looking and hearing the cynical condescending words

>> let's get right to our panel now. krystal ball is my colleague and one of the hosts of "the cycle." lilja na liliana is a diversity strategist. so much has been made of mr. romney's fund-raiser and the secret filming. one of the things we noticed was the things he didn't talk about. he didn't mention any socialist issues, he zbdidn't mention abortion, didn't mention gay marriage. why was that? does that mean that actually when they do that in public, it's a con on the audience, that they don't really care about those issues themselves. >> it speaks to this strange coalition that the republicans have right now. on the one hand the folks that were in that room, the monied elite who are concerned, first and foremost, about keeping their taxes low. and then you have the folks who are concerned in the heart of the country about the social

issues. so you will see candidates like mitt romney talking one way when they're with one group and professing that that is their commitment, number one priority and talking a very different way when they're in the heart of the country. i also think it underscores how strange that alliance is when you have one group that's fundamentally saying get the government out of the way, i don't want the government to do anything, and you have another group saying i want the government very much involved in the most personal decisions. >> the other group wants a transvageal probe. >> exactly. >> in that talk a person shouts rubio when the talk turns to hispanic votes. is that the best they can do? just shouting the name rubio. >> luckily they have at least one name to shout out -- >> that's true. >> -- that's becoming a symbol and somebody that gets referred to. but what i found even funnier with that tape was when romney was saying he would be better off if he was latino reminding

us of the fact that his dad was born in mexico. but once again it was funny, maybe a bad joke. i'm not offended as latino voter but what offends me is knowing he said this in may. he knows we're an important base, yet you are seeing very little efforts of outreach, having the numbers right in front of you when president obama -- >> what do you mean? he was speaking in florida today. there were a few people from hi span -- with hispanic origins there. he's trying his best. >> here is the problem. we are at the 11th hour. unfortunately, that tape now makes anything that he's trying to say to talk about the 100% or talk about the latinos as something to amend the issue that came up loud and clear from that private tape. as genuine as it may be, or not, it's coming out at the wrong time and it doesn't feel genuine. >> and i think there's a big difference between, you know, making sure you have a marco rubio and saw susana martinez o

stage and laying down a policy that makes sense in a genuine way where people can see you're not just saying, yes, i will be good for them. >> that's ridiculous. why are you asking him for detailed policy. you're so stupid. stop that. here is the president who addressed mr. romney's 47% comment earlier today in a forum. listen to this. >> are there people who abuse the system? yes, both at the bottom and at the top because there are a whole bunch of millionaires who aren't paying taxes at all either. >> isn't that right, krystal, in terms of analyzing how people treat the system. there are some who abuse it at the top and the bottom, but it's not 47%. >> that's exactly right, and, in fact, if you look at that chart of who the 47% are and you're looking for the moochers, i would say the millionaires who are paying no taxes would be at the top of the list. you even have mitt romney

saying, you know, i pay what i owe in taxes, not a penny more, which is probably true to the letter of the law, but he also spends a lot of money making sure he can take advantage of those loopholes and avoid every penny of taxes he can. >> we don't know what he pays in taxes. we won't release the details. the fact. matter is for the people earning 20000 or less they to pay more than romney. >> there's no recognition that a lot of republican policies like the earned income tax credit are what has resulted in a larger percentage of the population not paying taxes. so, i mean, just all the way around, it shows a fundamental lack of understanding of american people. >> last night, liliana, he does this forum on univision, we're seeing images of it, and he's asked four or five times how are you going to address immigration. he says he's going to offer a comprehensive reform. >> correct. >> what is it? silence. no details. he's asked if he would support what the president has done in

this order which allows for children of illegal immigrants who were brought here without any knowledge of their own, any power over their parents, to be allowed to stay and not be deported, he says nothing. is that good enough? >> certainly not, and what a great opportunity in front of millions of spanish-speaking households who are wondering and hoping there's going to be an answer because i'll tell you, and i hear it from the base and a lot of people out and about where some of the hispanic voters are disillusioned with the fact there was no action of a comprehensive immigration reform with president obama's first term. there is that on this side. but now you have the gop party not giving you an answer either. what a great opportunity for you to give a clear solution. he alludes to a solution from rubio that we have yet to see. he alludes to the fact he doesn't say yes or no i'll deport them but it sounds like going back to pointing fingers and saying we don't have a long-term solution -- >> he actually says he would veto the dream act. he doesn't support the dream

act. >> exactly, but yesterday, and he was smart enough to know he was in front of a univision audience and he wasn't going to say that again, but we don't forget, self deportation, vetoing the dream act and not having a clear solution is not the right answer. what a great opportunity that was missed. >> what will be interesting is if the president does win a second term, they've telegraphed one of the things we will take up is comprehensive immigration reform. this is the last election cycle when republicans can even credibly run without winning a significant chunk of the latino vote. >> you mean because of the demographic change. >> exactly. it will be interesting to see if the president wins and they take up comprehensive immigration reform if the republicans really continue down this hardline, anything that can be characterized as amnesty is totally off the table or if they have to end up coming to the center out of survival for their party. >> indeed. thank you both. >> thank you. >> next, we cry foul on this phony redistribution talk. stay with us.
